Do You Have TMJ Syndrome?

If you experience frequent jaw pain, you could have TMJ syndrome. An abbreviation for temporomandibular joint (i.e. the joint connecting the jaw to the skull on either side of the face), TMJ syndrome can cause pain or discomfort in one or both of these facial areas. Orthodontic treatment is available for TMJ syndrome. Fortunately, here at My Braces Doctor in Fairfax, VA, Dr. Nadia Sina and Dr. Hilda Oweisy can provide the proper treatment for this condition and get you back to feeling well!

Symptoms of TMJ Syndrome

TMJ syndrome is a condition in which the temporomandibular joints connecting the jawbone and skull frequently become irritated and cause chronic pain/discomfort. TMJ can develop following a jaw injury, in association with arthritis, or as a result of stress. Bruxism, a condition associated with frequent clenching or grinding of the teeth, can also potentially contribute to the development of TMJ syndrome.

Some of the symptoms of TMJ syndrome include:

  • A locked jaw restricting the ability to fully open the mouth
  • Pain or discomfort when opening or closing the mouth
  • Popping or clicking sounds in the jaw joints
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Headaches

TMJ syndrome can also result in pain and discomfort in other areas, such as stiffness in the neck or shoulder aches. Experiencing a shooting sensation up the back of the head can also be related to TMJ syndrome. Earaches not due to an ear infection, as well as ringing or buzzing in the ears, sometimes also develop in association with TMJ syndrome.

Treatment of TMJ Syndrome

Some people can manage the symptoms of TMJ syndrome by taking medications for pain relief and by alternately applying heat and ice to the area where pain or discomfort is felt. Another method for managing symptoms is eating soft foods when experiencing a flare-up of TMJ syndrome to avoid aggravating the jaw joints any further. The orthodontists at our office in Fairfax can offer other tips for TMJ symptom management.

Orthodontic methods for treating TMJ syndrome include laser therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. Both methods alleviate pain. In some cases, oral appliance therapy can be used to correct jaw alignment and reduce the symptoms of TMJ syndrome. More severe cases of TMJ syndrome could benefit from surgery in which corrective repairs are made to the temporomandibular joints.
